A Senior with Game

Two years ago, Mary Ann Muscat was in too much pain to walk for any length of time and in too much pain to ride her horse. This, in turn, resulted in bouts of depression. This past week, at the age of 66, Muscat won a gold medal in dressage at the BC Seniors Games with her 10-year-old quarter horse, Joey‘s Only.

Muscat attributes her debilitating pain to her doctor over-medicating her to treat her high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. “Doctors aren’t God,” Muscat states and urges people to question their own doctors if they aren’t feeling their medications are working properly.

After a major reduction in her medication, the pain diminished and the depression lifted. Muscat was once again able to get on with her life and, more importantly, get on her horse.

There is more to the BC Seniors Games than giving athletes such as Mary Ann Muscat a goal to train towards and a gold medal to hang around their necks. It is also about inspiration, camaraderie and having fun.
